Sandra Pauletto and Stephen Barrass
Sound Design for film and theatre provides an established framework and concepts for thinking about designing sounds for data sonifications. Sandra gives a review of the past century of sound design, and introduces the main techniques for data sonification developed in the past couple of decades. Stephen expands on these techniques by describing experiments with data physicalisations that produce sonifications using acoustics rather than electronics or software. He then proposes that the theory of Auditory Scene Analysis can provide a predictive basis for designing Stream-based sonifications.
