The International Conference for Auditory Display 2023 has the theme Sonification for the Masses. The Sonic Tilt Competition is a workshop that addresses this theme by providing a template for a 2D Spirit Level App for mobile phones that allows you to build a sonification of the x,y angles using the Pure Data sound synthesis tool.

The original Tiltification App has been downloaded more than 20,000 times, but many people found the sounds to be …. terrible ! Can you do it better ?

On June 29 the jury announced the Sonic Tilt Competition winner:
Piet Kuchenbecker: Voice Balance — A Spirit Level Based on Vocal Sounds

The workshop entries provide examples of approaches to sonification which include musification, vocalisation, signal processing, ecological and psychoacoustic techniques.

Alexandre D’Hooge – NIVEAU À BRUIT: SOUND-BASED LEVELING APP
Andrea Strata – MELODIFICATION – REINVENTING THE SOUND OF TILTIFICATION
Jatin Agarwala & Pratyaksh Gautam – TILT TO THE BEAT
Julien Bohnsack – CHORD LEVEL — A MUSICAL SPIRIT LEVEL APP
Justin Niestroj – LEVEL ASSISTANT — A SONIFICATION-BASED SPIRIT LEVEL APP
Katharina Groß-Vogt & Carmen Jenny Rieder – A-E-I-O-U – TILTIFICATION DEMO FOR ICAD2023
Piet Kuchenbecker – VOICE BALANCE — A SPIRIT LEVEL BASED ON VOCAL SOUNDS
Rainer Bollhorst – TRIPOD SOUND LEVEL
Stephen Barrass – SONICLEVEL-CRICKETS APP
Stephen Barrass – SONICLEVEL-POBBLEBONK APP
Stephen Barrass – SONICLEVEL-TUNING APP
Tim Ziemer – MIXING LEVELS — A ROCK MUSIC SPIRIT LEVEL APP

The workshop demonstrates practice-based design as a research method in sonification, providing insights into the user task, the characteristics of the data, the technical issues, the effect of hand-ear feedback and coordination, and the function and aesthetics of this seemingly simple interactive sonification.
